JAMAICAN HOUSEHOLDS STEALING ELECTRICITY

Some 220,000 households across the island are stealing electricity from the Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS.

Chief Executive Officer at JPS, Emanuel DaRosa, made the revelation while speaking yesterday on Cliff Hughes Online. He says 50,000 illegal connections have been removed in the last 12-months.

Mr. DaRosa says electricity theft is among the three major challenges the company is facing.

The other two are old, inefficient infrastructure and difficulty in recovering funds from billed customers.

Mr DaRosa says the 190 megawatt Old Harbour Power Plant is to be up and running by next Summer. He says the $330-million investment will reduce the company’s fuel bill by 8-per cent.

Mr DaRosa also says the company is to make several other investments in Jamaica.
