Farmer arrested for Power theft: Dies in custody.

Power theft is a compoundable offence and such incidents shows shocking approach of handling subject.

A farmer in Urrat Pradesh,India  was  put in prison for electricity theft, died under strange situation in Jarifnagar, Badaun. The district administration suspended two tehsil staff. Politicians accused the Government for harassing consumers by putting them in jail for just electricity bill collection.

Whether the case is a power theft or arrear collection is yet to be ascertained. Power theft, though a criminal case in India can be discharged once the accused pay a fixed amount envisaged in Electricity Act 2003 as compoundable offence.
